Sorrento Itineraries

Spending some time in Sorrento it must be said that time should be taken to make excursions to the many archeological, historical and natural sites to be found in this region

Naples:  A fascinating city with its colourful streets, churches, monuments and the vitality of its inhabitants, the joy that for centuries visitors to this city have felt.

Take a stroll along Via Caracciolo, the city’s seafront promenade, which starts at Mergellina and ends at Piazza Vittoria. Sail past the Villa Comunale and the Chiaia riviera, and take in one of the most fascinating views in the world.

Visit  Castel dell'Ovo with its small fishing hamlet (Santa Lucia), overflowing with restaurants offering typical Napoletan cuisine.

Take the funicular that stops in Piazza Dante and from here continue along Via Toledo until you arrive in the very heart of Naples, or as its called by the Napoletans, Spaccanapoli, with its characteristic shops.  Continue along Via Duomo to visit the Naples Cathedral where the relics of Saint Gennaro are to be found as well as the Hall of Treasures.  Continuing on, one arrives in Forcella, the historical heart and centre of traditional Napoletan customs.

Museo archeologico

Spend a day at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale , one of the most important museums on a European scale, where one can admire  not only the archeological remains (bronze, marble, paintings) found in Pompeii and Herculaneum, but also the Borgia collection, ancient Etruscun and Egyptian findings and the Santangelo collection of antique money.  One can reach the museum directly using the Metropolitana (subway) using the underground passages one finds at the Stazione Museo subway stop on Line 1.

Museo di Capodimonte

Vist the Nazionale di  Capodimonte museum situated inside the Palazzo Reale of the same name, which can count amongst its works the “Farnese Collection” and the “Borbonica Collection” as well as some works by such noted painters as Caravaggio (The Flagellation of Christ), Tiziano (La Danae) and Luca Giordano (The Madonna of the Rosary).  Furthermore, the museum also offers a section of comtemporary art where one can admire the famous “Vesuvius” by Andy Warhol.

Don’t forget to visit the Certosa di San Martino, a splendid architectural testament from 17th century Naples, which offers  marvellous panoramic perspectives of the whole city.  With the annexed museum from where it’s possible to visit  the famous Cuciniello nativity scene in the Nativity section, together with other Napoletan nativities.  Other sections to visit are the naval, theatrical and that which recounts the history of the King of Naples.
